Case Studies of Digital Technologies in Land-Use Net Zero Webinar

On Friday 7th March, the Digital Opportunities Topic Advisory Group (TAG) held a webinar entitled “Case Studies of Digital Technologies in Land-Use Net Zero”.
The Webinar brought together policymakers and key stakeholders to learn about examples of digital solutions for sustainable land-use transitions. The webinar included case studies and discussions around:
- IoT and Sensors: Jonathan Evans discussed the use of sensor networks for soil moisture monitoring, greenhouse gas flux measurement, and flood/drought research. He highlighted the COSMOS-UK network and its applications in agriculture, hydrology, and climate studies.
- Digital Twins: Aziman Khan explained the concept of digital twins as dynamic virtual replicas of real-world systems, used for real-time monitoring and policy decision support. She provided examples of digital twins used in urban planning, climate resilience, and agriculture, including the AI for net-zero project which focused on lowland peatlands.
- Geospatial Technologies: Toby Wayne discussed the application of geospatial technologies for monitoring land use changes. He presented case studies on crop monitoring, deforestation regulation compliance, and habitat mapping, emphasising the importance of scale and data fusion
The webinar emphasised the importance of digital technologies in gathering evidence, informing policy, and supporting sustainable land management practices to achieve net-zero emissions targets.
