University of Reading

Sokratis Stergiadis is a Professor of Animal Science and Research Division Lead for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at the University of Reading. With a research portfolio spanning over 50 projects as principal investigator and co-investigator (funded by the European Union, national governments, and academia-industry partnerships) his work focuses on strategies to feed and manage ruminant animals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve feed, energy, and nutrient use efficiency, and produce more nutritious animal-derived foods. His research supports sustainability and resilience in livestock production to meet net zero carbon targets and develops predictive models for emissions and feed nutritive value. Sokratis collaborates with livestock supply chain stakeholders, coordinating large-scale, long-term on-farm surveys to develop strategies for improving farm performance, efficiency, and environmental sustainability, while supporting product development, including animal feeds, additives, and supplements. Dedicated to bridging research and practice, he leads knowledge exchange initiatives with agri-food industry partners across the livestock production chain. Beyond academia, Sokratis holds several external professional roles, including Trustee of the British Society of Animal Science and member of the Agri-Sciences Committee of the Society of Chemical Industry, the Animal Nutrition Commission of the European Federation of Animal Science, and the Livestock Research Group of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases.
