Julia Martin-Ortega

Julia is Professor of Ecological Economics, with 20 years of interdisciplinary research experience. Julia’s research aims to further the understanding of relationships of communities and individuals with ecosystems and how policy can best make use of this understanding for a more sustainable management of water and land. She specialises in inter and transdisciplinary processes of impact-oriented nature. She advises the UK and Northern Ireland and Scotland’s governments on various scientific advisory roles; she is part of several international scientific panels, and she has been consulted by the UN Special Rapporteur on Water and Human Rights. Her work has been used by the UK Climate Change Committee and the UN/World Bank’s Water Values Initiative. She is a strong advocate for embedding social sciences at the core of water research as a means to addressing global land and water challenges. She is Associate Director of water@leeds, one of the largest interdisciplinary water research hubs in the world.
