Allan is a soil scientist with over 45 years experience in soil hydrology, soil survey and soil mapping and bio-physical resource analysis and has been responsible for systematic soil survey and data collection for the Scottish Soils Database. He is a former group lead for Soil Science and Mineralogy at the Hutton. He was involved in the resampling of the National Soil Inventory of Scotland and was the main author of the soil sampling protocols and procedures. He has authored or contributed to over 150 technical reports, has published over 70 papers in peer reviewed science journals and a book on UK soils (The Fragile skin: Soil Landscapes of the UK). He currently develops and delivers course material on soil classification and on soil profile description for the British Society of Soil Science.
