Ernest is research scientist within the Environmental and Biochemical Sciences department at the James Hutton Institute. His background lies in the application of engineering principles to soil and water management, with a particular focus on the use of optical (Infrared) spectroscopy and other sensing technologies, combined with machine learning and other data driven methods, for understanding the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils, with specific attention to how land management practices influence the delivery of ecosystem services from soil and water resources. He also applies these sensing techniques to the monitoring and characterization of contaminants in soil and water, supporting environmental safety and sustainable resource management.
