Elena is a senior biogeochemist and a leader of Soil Sustainability Research in Forest Research. Her research over the past 25+ years covers the impacts of climate, atmospheric and environmental changes on soils; impacts and benefits of afforestation and forest management on forest soil functions, health and ecosystem services with particular focus on forest and soil carbon, nutrient storage, stability and cycling and soil biodiversity. The research underpinned guidance and policy for woodland creation and management.

Elena is a nationally and internationally recognised expert in forest and soil biogeochemistry and has led and collaborated in numerous UK and EU projects, initiatives and research networks and she leads the National forest soil monitoring – BioSoil, part of EU ICP Forest Monitoring of forest ecosystems.
