Bringing science, mathematical frameworks and policy to life through poetry

In January, the Net Zero Futures Platform brought together participants from four nations for a collaborative workshop to co-create two new balanced pathways to net zero — pathways that also support ecological adaptation and rural development.

Alongside this work, writer and poet Harriet Fraser from the PLACE collective captured the spirit of the event in two original poems.

The first poem was written to open the workshop exploring options for changing land use to achieve Net Zero, whilst ensuring positive futures for nature and people.

Harriet’s final poem was framed as a Letter from a Model.

The FABLE (Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, land-use and Energy) calculator is a land-use model that simulates pathways towards sustainable land-use and food systems; and is updated regularly. Country-specific models are linked together to enable national teams to explore the part they can play in meeting national and global sustainability policy ambitions for food security, climate and biodiversity, whilst taking account of trade constraints.
