Omar Cristobal Carballo

Senior Scientific Officer in Ruminant Nutrition at Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland. He has a PhD in Veterinary Sciences. My research involves studies on the effects that dietary and animal factors on production efficiency, metabolism, rumen microbiome, and environmental footprint of cattle. I have experience working in animal nutrition and physiology, growth biology, animal metabolism, gastrointestinal gas emissions and rumen microbiology. My current research is focused on novel approaches to evaluate effects of diet and/or additives, and animal factors on rumen microbiome, greenhouse gas emissions, and nitrogen and energy utilization efficiency for cattle and sheep production. My role at LUNZ was to organize and conduct a grazing study, led by QUB, with suckler cows in different sward types: ryegrass/white clover, multispecies and silvopastoral with willow trees. The parameter evaluated were the performance, rumen microbiome and fermentation, and greenhouse gases emitted by the suckler cows grazing contrasting sward types. The grazing study took place at AFBI Hillsborough.
