João Palma, director of MVARC, holds a PhD in production ecology and resource conservation (focusing on agroforestry systems) from Wageningen University. With over two decades of experience in research, he specializes in modelling biophysical dynamics of agroforestry and forestry systems, including soil carbon and other resources (e.g. water, nitrogen, etc) while also engaging in data science (including High Performance Computing). He has developed notable online farm sustainability assessment tools such as the Global Farm Metrics research tool and the Re-Livestock Tool. His contributions to the field of agroforestry, forestry and agroecology, have led him to be listed amongst the world’s top 2% of most-cited scientists. In addition to his academic and research achievements, João is also a practicing farmer, integrating real-world agricultural practices with scientific research to promote sustainable land management, including production of essential oil of underutilized species.
